There's a Ron Mueck show there now, and there's always the flying book to stare at.

The new place is much prettier and more impressive than the old, but much less intimate and "homey" feeling. Ultimately, it's about the curation, not the building, and I get the feeling that balance is leaning a bit towards the architecture side these days. Still, it's great to have a set of the best small museums in the world less than an hour's drive away, and it's always fun to head over there. Dallas, eat your heart out. But, uhh, and I want to be delicate about this: please, please don't call it "The Modern". It's cringe-inducing. "The Modern" is the nickname for the Modern Art Museum in NYC, and comparisons are wildly inappropriate.

CORRECTION: The Ron Mueck show starts June 24th, timed to coincide with a $2/person increase to $10 frigging dollars per person to get in. What is this, Dallas? In high school I'd head over a couple times a month to visit my favorite paintings, won't be too many people doing that sort of thing any more. Wouldn't want them getting any ideas above their station, I suppose.

Chef Tim Love's casual eatery. Definitely want to do Lonesome Dove eventually (how can I resist foie gras tacos!?) but budgets and the kiddo indicate a less formal option is appropriate today.

UPDATE: I think somebody's spent some time at Shake Shack in Madison Square park. It's not the sort of place that could exist in Dallas, because it's not a theme restaurant: it is what it is. The architecture feels a little like one of those roofless facades you get on 6th street in Austin, but the food's better and the clientèle is pure western. Make that Western with a capital 'W'. Everything is "to go", but you can sit at the patio/band area that belongs to the bar next door. It was kinda warm, although we found some shade and sat right at the edge of the breeze from one of those giant fan/outdoor-evaporative-cooler things. The food was excellent, I'll update a bit more later.
